Do you work over the summer? I have always worked year round. I love to use themes over the summer-it engages my clients and makes speech therapy seem a little bit more like a camp.
My idea of camping is generally staying at a resort by the lake-doesn’t have to be fancy but I prefer beds to the sleeping bags on the ground. Camping is a ton of fun in therapy though!
I have a pop up tent that I use in my therapy room. Speech therapy cards are so much more fun in a tent.
We also make a pretend fire out of paper bags and orange construction paper.
The steps are simple. Start by twisting brown paper bags.
I usually make 3-4 paper logs and then stack them up.
Next you rip orange paper into strips.
Then you place the paper strips on top of the logs to create your fire.
We can practice beginning, middle, end by telling “ghost” stories over the campfire. We also take some time to make indoor s’mores. Just place the marshmallow and chocolate in between two graham crackers and heat in the microwave for 15-20 seconds. It’s fun to talk about how the marshmallow is puffing out.
Looking for some activities to go along with this activity? Check out my latest “snack-tivity” for S’mores.
It’s on sale through June for all of my fellow therapists who need to treat over the summer.
How about you? Are you working this summer or do you have it off? When do you have to go back to work?
