I first hear about the phlat ball from the amazing Laura Mize from Teach Me to Talk. If you work with young children, I highly recommend her books and videos. You can read about some of her favorite therapy materials HERE.
The phlat ball is ball that you push down on which makes it flat. Eventually it pops back up. I purchased a junior version which sometimes pops quickly-but sometimes it stays down for a long time (5 minutes or longer).
One of my new favorite ways of using this, is by using at as a timer in therapy. I use it with clients who have a slower response time or with my clients who have a little more difficulty getting started with tasks. This is a quick and easy activity where I can pull out a worksheet or two to drill or use on one of my data taking days. I LOVE it because there is minimal set up and I usually get a lot of repetitions done.
Here are are a few ways I’ve used it:
- Practicing articulation words or sentences.
- Working on time pressures for children with fluency disorders.
- During word retrieval or rapid automatic naming activities
- Cueing for faster responses for questions or problem solving activities
- Getting my clients ready to work by sitting down
- Working on early or core language vocabulary: push down, wait, pop, go, stop etc.
I purchased my phlat ball on Amazon.
Have you used this in your room? I’d love to hear ways that you used your phlat ball.
