One of my favorite activities is any type of game that involves popping toys, knocking things over, throwing things on the ground etc. They are universally popular with my clients and generally require minimal to no prep from me. Years ago, I had a Discovery Toys Stack and Pop that was AMAZING. I used it all the time with my younger clients who need to work on drill activities. It was like a ring stacking toy with little foam rings. You stacked each on the toy, pushed it down and there was a lever that let you push it down-and the rings would pop up. It was not a particularly safe toy-but used under supervision it was a great way to get in a lot of repetitions.
I love to use this activity with my younger clients. It’s great for targeting bilabials: pop, no pop, put in, pop up, ball etc. If you put your hand over the tube, the air pressure builds and you can make the balls pop up so high they scatter around the room.
It is made of fabric and there is a little frog that goes along with it. You push down to set it, place the frog inside and when you open the flower lid the frog pops out. I found this when I went to a CEU class where I paid too much attention to the therapy toys in the power point presentation than I did to the information provided.
I don’t use the frog as much anymore. Instead I use a handful of sparkly pom poms. This allows me to get a lot of targets during my sessions. Maybe we practice an articulation word 10 times and then put one pom pom in. We continue until we get our jar of pom poms in. Then when we open the flower-all of the pom poms fly out! Party Poppers
These are great for using during sessions. With younger clients, I may be working on 2-3 word phrases, put on, get popper, it popped etc. With older clients, we may be doing a drill activity and then shooting our targets at the wall. I found these poppers in the party supply aisle.
Pig popper and friends
These are by far my FAVORITE to use in therapy. I like to take picture cards and tape them on the wall. Then we use the pig popper or one of his many friends to try to hit the target. I’ve found them at specialty stores when on vacations but have also found them on Zulily. For 6-10.00 they are definitely worth picking up a few. I have a pig, moose, dog, fish and just got this weird alien that pops his ball outside the top of his head. There are so many different options, which one is your favorite?
These are really fun to use with my new WH question target activity too!
Do you have a favorite set or type of toys? I’d love to hear about them!
