I started working on this product in October of 2013. I didn’t get it finished before Christmas and have been slowly chipping away at it during the last year. I really like my Halloween Flip Flap trick or treating activity and wanted to incorporate that idea into a Christmas activity with a perspective taking theme.
I don’t know about you, but I have a lot of clients who struggle with how to accept unwanted gifts OR how to choose a good gift to give. I think a lot of adults struggle with this too. I mean, I wasn’t particularly grateful the year my husband bought me a plug in car vacuum and a humidifier for the bedroom. I had a hard time accepting the XXL fairy tie-dyed shirt he bought me when we were dating. But I also didn’t throw them at him and say he was stupid for getting them for me.
So far my clients have really enjoyed these activities-especially the flip/flap activities. They like the silliness of having different people come to their holiday celebration and get great presents (tablets) or horrible presents (spider). In fact, I have a hard time getting them to stop playing the activity. Plus it is great to work on perspective taking, social skills, pronouns, verb tense forms, and vocabulary development.
I wanted you to be able to use this activity year round-so I added templates for Christmas, Hanukkah AND birthdays. There are Social stories for opening presents related to Christmas and birthdays and steps to buying a gift.
In addition to the flip/flap game, I’ve included an activity related to a Youtube video which shows some pretty unexpected things happening related to present opening. If you liked my Slam Dunk Perspective Taking Freebie-I think you will like this activity.
I’ve also included a number of different activities including perspective taking worksheets that target beginning and advanced theory of mind concepts.
Visuals are included to help students understand how what we think will happen-and what actually happens impacts our emotions.
I’ve got a great freebie that includes a Present buying cheat sheet, a social story related to opening gifts and a wish list for your students to fill out. You can pick that freebie up HERE.
