Last week, I posted about how I “tidied” my speech room using category strategies. Check it out HERE . Once you’ve whittled down your materials to your favorite or most effective therapy tools, it’s time to organize your materials so you can find them quickly. I’ve tried a ton of organizational materials over the years, and find that I use a combination of index card holders, speech kits and binders to organize most of my materials.
Organizing Speech Room Ideas
I’m an organizational junkie. I’m always looking for new and different ideas to store my materials. I’ve settled on a system of binders, speech kits in clear boxes, and index card holders.
I keep my articulation card decks in drawer organizers. These wooden organizers were from my apartment, and didn’t fit into my new dresser when I moved into my home-so I brought it to work to organize my cards!
When I was working in tele practice, I started using a lot of CDs with therapy materials on them. I’ve taken time to print out worksheets by category-and store these within binders. Binders make me happy and it’s quick for me to find home program sheets or a quick activity for the end of session when I store them by category. Click on the picture below to learn more and download some free editable binder labels.
Everyone has their own organizational style-what works best for them. So I asked some of my SLP blogger friends to share their best tips for organizing your speech room.

The Dabbling Speechie creates interactive bulletin boards-stylish and functional!
Speech Sprouts uses clear bins to organize her materials by articulation sound!
Activity Tailor uses catering containers to create category and sound boxes.
Looks like Language uses reusable pockets and dry erase markers to re-use materials
Speech Dreams organizes her stamps using smaller boxes inside of a larger tote!
Organizing Speech TPT or Printable Materials
It can be challenging to store your TPT purchases or other printable materials so that you can find them quickly. I have organized my TPT purchases into three categories:
- Single Use: These are materials that I purchased with a specific student in mind-it might be a themed material or a specific teaching product for them. There may be other students who will benefit, but I don’t store these throughout the year. I print, use, and then discard when I am done. I do have them organized on my computer if I need to use it again.
- Seasonal: I keep all of my seasonal TPT products in bins with other seasonal games/materials. I have fall themed boxes, Halloween boxes etc.
- Year-Round: I use index card holders for most of my year round products. I got the idea from Carly from Happily SLP and LOVE it. Check out my amazing makeover here:
The downside of this approach, is that not everything fits inside a small card holder box. Check out how some amazing SLP bloggers are organizing materials of different sizes and shapes:
Road to Speech uses index card holders (and lots of other strategies) to organize her cards.
Twin Speech Language & Literacy SLP use folders to organize their printable materials!
Old School Speech uses photo cases to organize her printable materials.
Gold Country SLP uses plastic bags to organize her printable materials!
Organizing your Speech Materials on your Computer
My husband is always yelling at me about how my desktop is filled. Apparently this eats up computer processing time. Organizing my computer is still a work in progress for me. But when I saw this post from Laura from All Y’all need, I had some serious envy!
All Y’all Need has the prettiest desktop organization system I’ve ever seen.
Question: What organization systems do you use? Write a comment below to share your tips and tricks!
P.S. I mentioned before that I LOVE to use speech kits in therapy. I store my kits in similar size boxes and used contact paper to add the contents/targets on the outside of each box. I like to make speech kits to use in therapy with my miscellaneous supplies (categorization, object function, big/little etc.) I store my kits in similar size boxes and used contact paper to add the contents/targets on the outside of each box.
