A few years ago, I posted my favorite online activities and other activities for working on prefix, root words and suffixes. I’m excited to share an updated list of resources for teaching prefix, suffix and root words.

Prefix and Root Word Videos:
I love using YouTube for short teaching videos to introduce and strengthen comprehension.
Flocabulary is a subscription site that uses rap music to teach different educational concepts. This is one of their videos and songs that is FREE on youtube.
Between the Lions: This is an old children’s show. I like using this video when I am introducing prefixes.
Online Games and Activities for Prefix, Root and Suffixes:
The Quia website is always a good one to check out-I love to use their jeopardy games with middle and high school students. If you have your own subscription, you could also make activities including your own jeopardy games and Who wants to be a Millionaire.
- Vocabulary Games: This website has lots of games for vocabulary building. The games are pretty basic but it’s a nice review of the material, plus they change the game based on grade levels.
- Turtle Diary: This website has educational games that include games that focus on building words using prefixes and suffixes.
- TV411: This website was designed for adult learning. The activities for prefixes, suffixes and root words are definitely appropriate for middle school and high school students.
- Quizlet: You can create your own flash cards or look for flash cards that have already been created.
- Membean: This is a subscription site, but it includes a free area which includes root words. You can click on any root and a tree graphic pops up with the root word definition and examples of words using the roots. The vocabulary is advanced but a good option to check out.
I’ve also used some picture books in therapy to help solidify the concepts for my students. Sometimes I photocopy books in the pages for my clients to circle or identify the prefixes in these products. Click on the pictures below that will take you to my Amazon affiliate link to get more information.
I love using books in the Words are Categorical series too.
Prefix and Root Word Activities
I love to use hands on activities in therapy. When I first joined Pinterest, I made a TON of projects If you are ever in Minnesota, you can also come visit my closet of SHAME-filled with my half finished Pinterest products. I made some of the sentence building kits. I had scored a big bag of Megablocks at the Goodwill for a few dollars, and had leftovers. I used Avery label templates and typed in a variety of root words, prefixes and suffixes. The labels were too big for the blocks so I cut them in half.
Then I sorted the Megablocks into three colors: red (root words), yellow (prefixes), and blue (suffixes). I attached the labels to each side of the block.
Voila! Your very own word making tools!

I am most likely to use the Prefix, Suffix, Root Blocks. I’ve used index cards to similar effect in the past, but I like the block version even better since they lock together. I’m going to keep an eye out for some at the thrift store.

Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving your comments. You are one of my winners for my new prefix product (which I am still working on-but really hope to be finished within in the next few weeks!) Can you email me at Speech2uslp@gmail.com if you are interested in receiving? Thanks again!
