Star Wars was a big deal for me growing up. I spent many a night climbing my neighbor’s swingset and pretending I was Princess Leia in the Millennium Falcon. My mom had to hide her dark panty hose since I kept wearing them on my head-stuffed with socks and twisted to make the iconic side buns. Of course I saw Star Wars on the first day-but no spoilers from me on this blog.
What’s been interesting in therapy is that when a new or old Star Wars movie is released, I find that there is a large portion of my caseload which is drawn to the stories and the characters. Today, I am going to share some great resources for using Star Wars in your therapy sessions.
What is Star Wars?
If you were born in between the Star Wars movie series, maybe you probably missed out on watching them. You can catch up on the storyline by watching this short three minute video above.
Speech therapy Star Wars Activities
I love these snowflakes from artist Anthony Herrera. He has three different sets. You print, fold and cut out to create your own Star Wars themed snowflakes. I like to use this activity for following directions OR for a reinforcer, we work on a certain number of trials and then they can cut out part of their snowflake. The middle parts are difficult to cut out-you could prep them beforehand. If you can’t figure out how to fold the snowflake (like me)-check out these directions.
What Star Wars character worked at Applebees? Darth Waiter. (Hahaha…)
I love using humor when I am working on multiple meaning words and figurative language. Students really have to think about what makes the joke funny which strengthens metalinguistic skills. This site has some funny jokes (and some inappropriate ones-so pick your jokes before therapy). http://www.jokes4us.com/celebrityjokes/starwarsjokes.html
The Disney site has quite a few fun paper crafts that you can download for FREE. I love the R2D2 craft. I don’t know if I would trust my clients with these “light sabers” but I love these pool noodle light sabers and am planning to make them with my son.
I love using mad libs to work on vocabulary OR articulation. I found an online Star Wars story on Madglibs that would be fun to use in therapy. You can also use my affiliate link to purchase your own set of Madlibs Starwars.
Articulation drill seems more fun when you are talking about special interests. I created this list of Star Wars vocabulary sorted by sounds to use in therapy. You can pick yours up for FREE by clicking on the picture below. Are you a Star Wars nerd like me? R2D2. What a great way to teach kids about non-verbal language! I loved him before I knew what that was.
Heidi says
And thank you for posting your ideas for therapy. Inspired by Star Wars will be a hit when we get back from break.

Love R2D2 too! We had a robot R2D2 at my house-it would dance and move around but I brought it on a home visit and it fell down the stairs. My husband still hasn’t forgiven me.

A Star Wars nerd also I am. My favorite character has always been Han Solo. Going to see the movie tonight- can’t wait!

Hahaha! Your unique syntax I love!

For some odd reason, I always liked Chewbacca.

I saw the new flick the day before Christmas break and planned on doing a “Yoda talk” lesson with my 6th grade speech kids that are “over” the other games. I wanted to print out about 10 sentences and let the kids translate them into “Yoda” phrases. I.e. “I like coffee” would be “Like coffee, I do.”

Love that idea! Such a great way to work on syntax and vocabulary.

My own kids are OBSESSED with Star Wars! We have all seen the new movie and loved it! I always have kids at school that love these movies when they come out. These are all great ideas to incorporate Star Wars into therapy.
My favorite character was always Han Solo.
Thanks for a great post!

Loved R2D2 in the originals, but BB-8 has stolen my heart this time around. I’ve loved watching my 4-year-old be captivated by him and play with her own little BB-8.

I agree! I was a little hesitant going into it but I liked him too!
Kat says
I love this! And so will my students. My favorite character is Chewbacca. Thanks for sharing your ideas!
Katie says
I have only watched three Star Wars movies so far! My favorite character is Princess Leia. I dressed up as her a couple times- Megacon and Halloween. I plan to incorporate some of these ideas into therapy.

I can’t tell you how excited I was to find this today. It was a suggested “pin” that appealed to both the speech geek and scifi nerd in me. Thank you.

I’m so glad you liked the post! And I’m always excited to meet some new Sci-Fi and Speech nerds!

A colleague of mine shared this with me, as too was a kid that grew up LOVING Star Wars. I made a Star Wars Would You Rather Freebie and wanted to share with you and the rest of the Star Wars fans out there. The kids are so into it, I love it! Thanks 🙂

I’m a star wars fan myself! I love being able to bond with my students over the movies & books. In celebration of May the Fourth I wore my “Teacher by Day. Jedi by night” shirt. I will always be a Princess Leia fan…what a great heroine!
adminS2U says
I love that you wore that shirt! Awesome!
