Once the holiday season starts, I’m always looking for quick and easy activities to motivate my clients. Don’t get me wrong, I love adapting Pinterest projects or using amazing TPT products in therapy. But sometimes I’m looking for an activity that I can set up in less than 5 minutes.
I didn’t realize that you could use white board markers on tables until I read Miss Thrifty SLP’s blog. It still took me a few months before I dared try using a marker on my table. It’s pretty fun-and my clients are always really motivated to write on the table.
Mostly I use my table writing for keeping score, writing out hints or graphic organizers. The other day, I forgot to grab any materials beyond a card deck for one of my clients. Which is how I came up with table top drawing. It’s only limited to your imagination (and ability to draw a straight line). Here are two games we played:
Birthday Party
I made a (very poor) drawing of a present and put my target cards inside the box. I drew a cake with candles and after each third card, I lit a candle. When all the “candles” were lit, I sang “Happy Birthday” and let my client “blow” out the candles. (I erased them as they blew on them).
Fishing Game
A perfect alternative when you can’t find the time to add paper clips to your therapy cards for a more traditional fishing activity. or when you realize that the paper clips you purchased were actually plastic and not metal…
Monster Snack
You can draw any animal with a giant mouth for this activity. Sometimes it just seems too much to pretend to eat cards with a hand puppet. Especially when you are backed up on your handwritten billing notes-you need to conserve your hand strength.
Have you drawn on your table? I’d love to hear what you did!

Nothing like a lack of materials to bring out your spontaneous creativity. I love these ideas! So simple, but engaging.

That is the truth! Sometimes you just have to go for it! Thanks so much for commenting.

I think you understand “no prep” better than any other SLP. You make my worst days better. Thank you.

Thank you Summer! I’ve got some videos I’m working on of some super easy “no prep” card deck activities that I will be posting as soon as I get over seeing myself on video. (it might be a few more weeks!)
