Disclaimer statement: I traded products with the Speech Owl to write this post. The opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
I’m participating in Kim and Angela from Sounds Like Fun’s Speech trading post.
The idea is simple, we were each paired up with a different blogger (kind of like a blogger pen pal) to trade one of our products to use in therapy. There are over 28 bloggers participating. It’s a fun way for me to meet new bloggers/sellers and also get to work with some new products.
Guess “hoo” I’m matched up with? Elizabeth from the Speech Owl. You can tell it’s getting closer to the end of the year when I start bringing out more and more bad “puns.”
I went to her store and LOVED all of her covers-so many great looking products, it was hard to pick just one. I love the How Do Dinosaurs…book series, so I was excited to take a peek at this packet.
I love to use books in therapy but struggle with how to maximize therapy time-book companions are a great way to make sure I’m targeting my goals within my sessions.
What’s in it:
This book packet is filled with materials making it easy to use this with a variety of different groups. I loved that she included colored and black and white versions of each page. I’m partial to color-but there are times when you just don’t have the ink to print it out.
Here’s what s in the whole packet:
- Story Elements Grammar Worksheet
- 7 Tier 1 vocabulary words
- 6 tier 2 vocabulary cards with definitions
- 6 tier 2 definition cards
- Sequencing retell cards
- 10 WH questions
- 7 WH questions with three answer choices
- 17 Yes/no questions with additional WH questions.
- 10 plural cards
- 16 past tense verb cards
- 11 understanding negation cards
- 7 emotion cards
- 23 how do you feel cards
- 23 problem solving cards
The cards are larger which makes them ideal to use in a group or circle time as everyone is able to see the pictures.
We started by using the narrative retell cards to tell the story. I used the tier 2 cards as examples to define the words while reading the story. Afterwards, I hid a second set of the cards around the room which we found and matched up to write out definitions. Then we worked on practicing our vocabulary word functionally (ex. what are three things you could fling? I would fling a _______). One of my favorite activities was the answering questions with three possible answers.
This packet is so versatile-it can be used for language or social skills. The calm down visuals and size of the problem videos were fantastic. I paired this activity with my dinosaur popper for some extra fun.
