I love using jokes in therapy. Mostly because they are fun-but also because a majority of my language impaired clients struggle with language based humor. They love visual humor-pratfalls, fart jokes etc. But they need explicit instruction to understand why jokes, which rely on manipulating language, are funny. These are the students who may learn the sequence of a knock knock joke but then insert a visual aspect into the punch line.
Knock knock
Who’s there
Hulk
Hulk who?
Hulk fell off the cliff and broke into a million pieces.
That’s an actual joke from my brother-circa 1980 something. He received speech and language services starting at age 3 and going through high school. Do you ever wonder about your students that have moderate but not profound language deficits? My brother has a full time job, a girlfriend and a child.
Two of the easiest types of joke to teach include jokes where a word sounds like another word (How was your breakfast? Eggsellent!) or where the joke uses a multiple meaning word. (What has four legs but can’t run? A table) It’s a fun and motivating way to expand your student’s vocabulary and address multiple meaning words.
I have an Easter themed freebie for you with 12 jokes. If you aren’t on Spring break-enjoy-if you are-enjoy that more and save these for next year.
