Is anyone else a fan of Awards shows? We usually host an Oscar’s® party every year. I have a red carpet that I roll out-and sometimes we dress up. My husband and I try to see as many Academy Award nominated movies as we can before the big night. This year I thought it would be pretty awesome to bring that party to my speech room.
Red Carpet
You can’t really have a red carpet party-without a red carpet entrance. Try to snag some of that red rolled paper from the art department to create the perfect entry into your speech room. Just remember to use painter’s tape so you don’t leave any residue on the floor.
Photo Props:
Do your students bring their cell phones to Speech? Pick up some photo props and practice describing each other using your props. You can also make your own by printing them and attaching to chopsticks using glue dots. I HEART these free printables from Kristen Duke at Capturing Joy. Check them out HERE
Walk of Fame:
An Hollywood themed week wouldn’t be complete without a walk of fame. Have younger students cut out stars and write their name on them to create your own “speech walk of fame” A fun way to get kids moving is to print a bunch of stars and write your therapy targets on them. Read your question and students have to try to stand on the correct answer on the “walk of fame” You can pick the star up for free by clicking on the picture above.
Check out this Hollywood star generator online for older students. Just type in your name and it makes your own full color star.
Guess the movie: synonym game
One of my favorite games is the Movie Synonym Game. Replace the words of popular movies with synonyms and see if the other person can guess what you are talking about. For example: Irritated Fowl would be Angry Birds.
Movie Trailer Paraphrase.
I love watching movie trailers. I like to get to the theater early, just to make sure I don’t miss them. Movie trailers are a great way to work on inferencing, paraphrasing and answering questions. I have an iTunes trailer app on my iPad that I use in therapy. If I am just on the computer, I will go to Moviefone. Many times, my students will want me to watch a specific trailer. I usually write it down and check it out at home to make sure it appropriate for our speech room.
